Countries which have their own version
British talent search series Pop Idol has spawned dozens of spin-offs in over 30 countries, in the what is now referred to as the Idols format (as described by FremantleMedia). As part of an out-of-court settlement between the Pop Idol producers and the creators of Popstars, international sales contracts of the format contain a clause preventing the local broadcaster from using the word pop in the local title.

The original United Kingdom show, Pop Idol, debuted in 2002. Its winners were Will Young and Michelle McManus. Since its debut, the format has been sold to numerous broadcasters around the world. These variants are listed below, along with the names of the winners:

There is also a World Idol competition, however not all of the countries listed above participated in the December 2003 competition.

[edit] Unlicensed adaptations of the format
- American Juniors- consisted of only pre-teen competitors.
- Een Ster in 40 Dagen ("A Star in 40 Days"), an Idol-like show in the Netherlands with only Shlager singers and music.
- Kokhav Nolad ("A Star is Born") is an unlicensed Hebrew version of the format broadcast in Israel.
- Star Academy is a combination of the Idol and Big Brother formats. Contestants perform on an idol-like stage but also are followed and watched during their training to become a pop star. About 15 versions exist all over the world, including in some countries that also have a version of Idol, such as the UK, USA, France, Canada (French-Canadian), Pan-Arabia and South Africa. It sometimes goes by different names in these various countries, including Operación Triunfo, La Academia, Project Fame, Project Superstar, The One, Fame Academy and Akademi Fantasia.
- X Factor- UK evolution; Wider age range of contestants, allowing groups and the 3 judges each coach one third of the contestants and decide which contestants should face the public vote. Also broadcast in Australia, Russia, the Netherlands & Belgium.
- Megasztár- Hungarian youth talent search.
- Minutes to Fame was broadcast on TVB, and now become a popular programme in Hong Kong.
- Nashville Star, strictly country version
- Nuevas Voces de América, a Spanish speaking version in Telemundo.
- Popstars Live was the Australian follow-up to Popstars but had more in common with Australian Idol than the original Popstars series.
- Project SuperStar was the chinese idol series based in singapore.
- Star in a Million, a Filipino production similar to Idol but incoporates variety and comedic aspects to each episode rather than the high drama of western Idol versions.
